Peritoneal Dialysis: An Overview of Treatment for Kidney Failure
Peritoneal Dialysis a cleansing fluid called dialysate is introduced into the abdomen through a surgically placed catheter. The dialysate draws waste and extra fluid from the blood vessels around the peritoneum into the abdomen. After a few hours, the used dialysate is drained from the abdomen and replaced with fresh dialysate to start the process again. This happens either continuously or in cycles throughout the day, depending on the type of peritoneal dialysis being used.
