Diabetes Care: Essential Strategies for Control
There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes accounts for about 5% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes and develops when the body's immune system destroys pancreatic beta cells, preventing it from producing insulin. Type 2 diabetes accounts for about 90% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes and develops when the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin or when pancreatic beta cells can no longer produce enough insulin to regulate blood glucose levels.
