Carcinoid syndrome refers to a group of symptoms that occur in some patients with carcinoid tumors. Carcinoid tumors are a type of neuroendocrine tumor that forms in neuroendocrine cells, which release hormones into the bloodstream. The most common sites where carcinoid tumors originate include the small intestine, appendix, and lungs. Carcinoid syndrome occurs when carcinoid tumors metastasize to the liver. This allows excess levels of peptides and amines, like serotonin and prostaglandins to enter the systemic circulation instead of being removed by the liver.
